Musu Musu Hansi Deu Na Lai Lai: The Story Behind the Norden Tenzing Bhutia Song

It is amongst those tracks that remind one of Nepali pop music, be it "Musu Musu Hansi Deu Na Lai Lai". It beckons almost as if to join in the joy of the moment. But what makes this song more special is the man behind the voice, Norden Tenzing Bhutia, who was one of the pioneers in Nepali music, giving us several classic hits that drew Nepali music closer to mainstream pop culture with his passion.

Who Was Norden Tenzing Bhutia?

Norden Tenzing Bhutia was not just a mere singer but a trendsetter who brought about change in the face of music in Nepal. Born on January 21, 1950, in Kolkata, India, Norden spent his childhood in Kurseong, a hill station in Darjeeling. His childhood was surrounded by music since his grandparents' home would often be filled with legendary musicians like Amber Gurung, Gopal Yonzone, Shanti Thatal, and Ranjit Gazmer. Although he was never allowed inside when they played, Norden listened from afar; his mind would run riot, visualizing himself as a musician.

Norden joined the British Army in 1971, where he was a

Gurkha soldier. It was in the army that the musical journey of Norden really took flight. He found fellow musicians among his comrades, and with them, he formed a band that would leave an indelible mark on Nepali music-The Himalayans.

    Birth of the Himalayans

It was not easy to form a band while serving as soldiers. The Himalayans bought second-hand instruments in Hong Kong and started off, but what they lacked in resources, they made up for with talent and passion. Norden named the band "The Himalayans" after their homeland. No matter how far they traveled, their hearts always belonged to the majestic mountains of Nepal.

First, the Himalayans played covers, but an opportunity came when BFBS radio asked them to record a song. So, Norden rose to the occasion by recording "Gajalu Le Akhai Chopne," penned by his friend-the late Arun Thapa. It was an instant hit, which catapulted The Himalayans into the limelight and opened all doors for their songs.

The Classic Hits That Stole Hearts: Norden Tenzing Bhutia is known for tracks such as "Musu Musu Hansi Deu," "Gajalu Le Aakhai Chopne," "Kaha Timro Mayalu Lai," and "Malai Dherai Dherai Maya." These songs weren't just hits; they defined an era in themselves. His music merged elements of rock, pop, and blues into a unique sound that appealed much to the younger generation of Nepalis in the 1970s.

"Musu Musu Hansi Deu Na Lai Lai" is also out of the ordinary for its appealing melody and light-hearted lyrics. The title itself, which translates to "Give a little smile," speaks volumes about the carefree and joyful feeling that Norden wanted to impart to his listeners. Consequently, it was an instant hit because of the infectious energy and uplifting message and still does today.

    A Song That Crossed Borders

Its influence had spilled over the border of Nepal. It even caught Bollywood's attention when playback singer Shaan performed a Hindi-Nepali version for the movie Pyaar Mein Kabhi Kabhi. It was a remix version that helped reach the song to a wider section of audiences, bringing Norden's creation into the Indian mainstream. While Norden wished his name had been credited as the original composer, he still took joy in that so many celebrated his music.

    The Musician and the Soldier

Juggling two very disparate worlds, Norden lived life both as a soldier and as an artist. A Gurkha soldier in the British Army, he traveled far and wide-from Kurseong to Illam, Katihar, Jogbani, Dharan, Barrackpore, Hong Kong, and finally the UK. The challenges of his military career notwithstanding, Norden never let go of his love of music. In the army, he acquired the name "singing soldier," as he was ever ready at any assembly or function, with his songs bringing the needed closeness and warmth to his fellow soldiers.

The songs that Norden wrote spoke volumes of missing home. His lyrics spoke of yearning for the hills of Darjeeling, memories of young love, and the beauty of the places he left behind. In fact, this deep connection to his homeland is what made his music so relatable-especially to the inhabitants who lived far away from home.

Love for Darjeeling and the Hills

He once told in an interview that some of his best moments were performing with local bands at the Darjeeling Carnival. Despite international fame, he always felt the strongest connection to Darjeeling. To Norden, the love of the people from his hometown was the highest honor he could receive. Be he performing to thousands or just to friends, he was always "Norden Daju"-brother, singer, artist. This connection he prized; thus, every time he sang a note, it resonated with these facts.

    The Fights and Successes

Not everything in Norden's life was plain sailing. His friends disappointed him, making commercial use of his compositions despite his confidence in them, but he did not bear grudges. The setbacks notwithstanding, he remained true to his art, giving his music with love and devoid of rancor.

Later in life, Norden faced an even bigger challenge when he was diagnosed with throat cancer. But even while he was battling the disease, he continued to make music, refusing to allow his illness to silence him. Unfortunately, Norden passed away on August 4th, aged 69 years, in Aldershot, UK. News of his demise saw the Nepali music fraternity and beyond go into mourning.

Nepali musician Abhaya Subba Weise wrote on social media: "Thank you for beautiful songs and for memories extracted from them for all of us. I mourn your passing but I will always celebrate the joy you brought all of us with your songs. Goodbye. Rest in Peace."

    A Lasting Legacy

Norden Tenzing Bhutia probably won't be a commonly recognized name for the present age, yet he is a remarkable individual for the people who grew up paying attention to his music. He was one of the trailblazers that presented rock, pop, and blues to Nepali standard music, changing the melodic scene and rousing a variety of different performers to try different things with new sounds and styles.

That influence of his music can be seen in the fact that his songs continue to be enjoyed and staged to this day. Be it a cover of "Gajalu Le Aakhai Chopne" at a local festival or "Musu Musu Hansi Deu" being played at a family gathering, the songs of Norden remain a medium of merriment in people's lives.

Remembering Norden: The Emotional Chords He Struck

This song, "Musu Musu Hansi Deu", was more than the melody; it was emotions, memories, a piece of Norden's spirit-a reminder to smile in the face of challenges, to hold on to the joy that life offers, no matter the circumstances.

While listening to "Musu Musu Hansi Deu," it reminds us just how close we are to our roots. Memories from the past  reverberate. That is what makes his songs timeless: the connect that Norden's music is able to make with people at this level.

    The Lyrics: Simple Yet Profound

Here's the graphic chorus of "Musu Musu Hansi Deu," which is strummed out on guitars and sung around campfires-once again, musically and lyrically echoed around the continent and across the ocean:

    A               Bm
Musu musu hansi deu nai lai lai
    Bm               A
    musu musu hansi deu
    A           Bm
    yo maya lai mari deu
               A
    ya hridaya chedi deu

    A                           Bm
Karke nazar haruko nasalu asar ma paren
                         E          D         A
Gulabi onth haru ko mitha mitha chot ma pare
      D                      A
Behos hune hoki yaha ma maati sake
      D                      A
Behos hune hoki yaha ma maati sake

    A                               Bm
Mero youban ko baaga ma phuelo phool jasama
                           E    D           A
timi maatra nai hau ki timi maatra nai hau
      D                 A
Batasine hoki oili jharne po hoki
      D                 A
Batasine hoki oili jharne po hoki

Simple lines, how much warmth there is in them. These lines speak about love and attachment in such a pure, innocent way-no use of heavy, over-the-top, in-your-face declarations; instead, they just innocently wish that she would smile and share her joy.

Conclusion: The Eternal Smile of Norden Tenzing Bhutia

As we remember Norden Tenzing Bhutia, we celebrate much more than just a mere musician; we celebrate a legacy that brought change in the Nepali music scene, a man who bridged gaps between cultures, and a soldier who never stopped singing. His songs will continue to thrive by bringing smiles, nostalgia, and belonging to the ears that listen.

Norden lived a life of journeys, love, struggles, and music. Nothing in life seemed to dampen his spirit of art, not even at the most critical junctures. Perhaps that is the reason why his songs relate to the feelings of so many. They come from a place of authenticity, a real love for music, and an unbroken connection to his roots.

Next time one hears, "Musu Musu Hansi Deu Na Lai Lai", let us remember Norden Tenzing Bhutia- his voice and his story, and the smile he wished to have on all of us. His music is that rare gift which keeps on giving, reminding one to stop and smell the flowers at every little moment.
